This is one of the funnest books you will ever read. It is a compilation of historical figures that set out to discover, explore, conquer - or whatever - and goof it up from the moment they decide on the attempt. One group tried to reach the pole by setting out in a ballon with ropes dragging the ground to control the speed and direction of the ballon. It didn't work. The described results are laughable, if somewhat darkly. In fact, most of the stories are horrific, but nonetheless carry a midnight kind of humor with them. The reader will quickly see that things are not going to go right for the leaders of the pack, and the people are often so stupid they seem to deserve what they get. Its like watching someone load a cannon with a flaming ramrod. When the end comes it seems inevitable and makes you wonder why anyone would go ahead in the situation. People have actually done things that make the 3 Stooges look smart. The descriptions of the people and the excursions are comical. If you like to laugh at history and wonder about the ability of human kind to perpetuate folly this is the book for you. It is a quick and easy read, and it can be read in small sections as each story stands on its own. Well put together, well written and lots of side splitting humor.AD2
